2018 Cap Maritime Chardonnay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, South Africa

Aromas of lemon, yellow apple, pear, and starfruit. Rich flavors of quince, lime, honeydew melon, and crème fraîche dominate an opulent, full, yet vibrant palate. Hints of fresh pineapple, poached pear, and lemongrass linger on a clean, focused finish.

Chardonnay grapes are sourced from a small parcel from the Hemel en Aarde Valley Ridge and transported in small lug boxes in refrigerated trucks to the winery located in Franschhoek, maintaining the freshness of the grapes. Careful selection takes place prior to whole-bunch pressing. Fermentation takes place in 60% new French oak and 40% Nomblot concrete eggs. The wine is supple and precise with poised acidity and freshness, and offers flavors of quince, lime, honeydew melon and crème fraiche.

Marc Kent is the owner, chief winemaker, and driving force behind Cap Maritime. Marc has always considered the Hemelen-Aarde Valley as one of the most exciting places to grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in South Africa, and with Cap Maritime, Boekenhoutskloof has created wines that capture the essence of their origin, while at the same time representing a style of wine to which the winery aspires. A maverick spirit, he is unafraid to experiment with the unconventional, but his principal commitment is to quality on every level and in every detail. Marc is also the owner of Boekenhoutskloof, The Chocolate Block, Porcupine Ridge, The Wolftrap, and Helderberg Winery
