2010 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva “Madonna del Piano”

Brunello Riserva on its own is a treat, but this one marks history and there are no words to describe the pleasure this wine delivers. Expect a very long and powerful experience when you drink this. It’s history in a glass.

The Madonna del Piano Riserva is a single-vineyard Brunello Riserva that Valdicava makes only in the best vintages. Valdicava Riserva is typically lush, textured and elegant, with deep, concentrated, and powerful with flavors of dark cherries, earth, and oak.

A majestic representation of its benchmark vintage, the ’10 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna del Piano is a lustrous, long-lived and powerful wine. Pure red fruits mingle with brooding notes of warm saddle leather, cigar wrapper, brown spices, balsamic, and grilled herbs in this complex, detailed Brunello Riserva. This wine is at once massive and finessed, crossing the palate in a rush of velvety, chewy tannins as it builds to a long, lingering finish. One of the very first single-vineyard Brunellos, the Valdicava Madonna del Piano very much set the standard for cru Brunello. Biodynamically grown and produced, Valdicava Brunello derives from very high quality, very low yields of berries, vinified with mostly traditional protocol, minimal use of barriques and almost entirely in large neutral oak botti. Just entering its drinking window, this cru Brunello Riserva will drink for decades.
